The Shiwiar Rainforest Initiative was a six-month expedition in the Ecuadorian Amazon in which a group of Ecuadorians and foreigners worked to build capacity and carry out research in remote Shiwiar communities in the region of Pastaza. Specifically we researched and recorded snails, flora, architecture and Shiwiar life, and we built capacity with a view to enhancing the prospects for Shiwiar people to host tourists. This was in 2000, and the communities are continuing to host tours regularly and have built tourist cabins. They want to strengthen their lands against petroleum exploration amongst other things.
